Hurry – the train is leaving!

You might think that this is a ‘shaggy dog’ story – an urban myth.  If I didn’t personally know all of the players involved I’d be sceptical myself.  This is exactly what happened…

And, the winner is….

There was a lot of controversy recently over a Kids Pageant (official title: Universal Royalty). The event was  scheduled at the Bracken Court hotel in Balbriggan. The hotel cancelled the booking and the competition was eventually held in a bar/nightclub, Corrigan’s Kitchen in Castleblaney. The pushback against this, and similar events, is that kids wear costumes and make-up which is age-inappropriate. Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald described it as the “sexualisation of very young children”. Strong stuff indeed.

Typical View – there’s water everywhere

USPJust back from a short hop to Stockholm. I’ve admired Sweden from a distance over many years but never got to see it up close and personal. The city is magic. Set on 14 islands, the architecture gives the place a feeling of coordinated beauty, with public and private buildings built on a grand scale.  They either have a great planning system, a desperate shortage of brown envelopes, or both.

What a great idea

dogI invariably order peasant food when I’m out. Steak & Kidney pies.  Goulash. Hot Pots of all varieties. Perhaps it’s a throwback to the 1970′s. When we lived in rented accommodation, the trick was to treat each meal as if it were the last food you might see for weeks. Like a Boa Constructor, we attempted to devour the equivalent of a small deer at each sitting. Now that the danger of starvation has receded, I still lean towards comfort food.

  ‘Bad behaviour’

I recently played golf with a guy who owns a hairdressing business and he relayed the following story…

Anorexia NervosaWoman with extreme emaciation (anorexia nervosa). From 'Emsworth Cottage Hospital, Case of Anorexia Nervosa; Necropsy (Under the care of Mr. Lockhart Stephens.) published in The Lancet Jan. 5, 1895.

When working in the executive coaching arena, I sometimes bump up against topics that require specialist expertise. One example is eating disorders – the umbrella term for a number of distinct conditions including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, Binge Eating, Overeating or some combination of the above. Interestingly, eating disorders cut across all social classes – so none of us are immune. Let’s have a quick look at Anorexia Nervosa.

What is it like to write your first book?

It is a very strange feeling to be able to say you have actually written a book.  Well I have and it is called “Tendering - Navigating the Maze”.

ostrich head in sandIt’s hardly news that men hate going to the doctor.

Perhaps it’s handing over the €50, the fact that some men are programmed to be tough or even a secret fear of needles (Trypanophobia).  Who knows? But, when it comes to medical issues, most men can be found hiding in a dark corner called avoidance.  When avoidance (the behavioural form of denial) occurs in the business arena, the results are equally unhealthy.

Sean MooneyI’m a tad reluctant to post this blog as it seems like cashing in on the back of someone’s else’s achievements. However, as this has never posed a major impediment in the past, why change the habits of a lifetime?
