I am an architect with over 25 years’ experience in Ireland, France, the UK and the West Indies. My skills include the design and design management of diverse project types varying from Urban Design Master Planning, Office Buildings , Shopping Centres, Apartment buildings to private houses. I have much experience working efficiently with both Irish and International multi-disciplinary design teams and project Clients through English and French. My experience ranges from design of individual buildings and their interior Fit Out, to Project Management, leading other design professionals, administering building contracts and collaborating with craftspeople. I have travelled extensively and designed buildings to respond to different climatic, cultural and regulatory environments in Europe, the West Indies and Middle East. My particular interest in contemporary design responses to sensitive historic environments has led me to be involved in a number of high profile heritage projects in Ireland and the Middle East. I was elected to the Board of the Dublin Civic Trust, a charitable Conservation Trust in 2010 where I have assisted with business planning and their APP development for Dublin City and key reports / activities. Other specific expertise includes the forensic investigation and reporting of completed construction work for the purposes of litigation and aerial photographic survey work.

James Toomey Architects built a reputation as innovative retail architects and designers from the 1980’s with the refurbishment of the Powerscourt Town House in Dublin’s City Centre and went on to design major Shopping Centres in the capital – Jervis Centre and Stephen’s Green. They are now designing Tourism, Retail and Commercial projects in the Middle East. This practice gave me the opportunity to design for many of the major developers in the country, encouraging clients to engage the necessary multidisciplinary design teams early in design process and foster a collaborative working practice within the office and with other core design disciplines and subcontractors.

The structure of this 1970’s office building was retained. The building was located at the end of terrace of the Georgian Architectural Conservation Area of the Capital. My role was to design the building for Planning, co-ordinating all Consultants, incorporating a sculpture by Janet Mullarney to front of the building and CGI presentations which were also used as part of the design process.
Parkway Shopping Centre Limerick – Value €100 million – 2004 - on site
This retail project was designed for a brownfield site on the outskirts of Limerick for Developer Liam Carroll. My role was to design the shopping centre, co-ordinating all Design Team Consultants with the Developer and Architectural Team to Planning Stage.

My role was to redesign the flagship building and facades for Planning, to incorporate modern floor plate heights within the Victorian street scape.
Redd House Master Plan – Value € 1 Billion – 2003
The Redd House quarter of Dublin city has as centrepiece the GAA stadium and the Masterplan addressed how best to address crowd flow, public transport, and a vision of a mixed and sustainable development of the quarter. My role was to design the Plan and the 12 component buildings, parks and urban spaces.
Riverdance and Masterplan for Docklands -1999
This Masterplan centred on the South Docklands and incorporated as centrepiece in a new urban space the HQ for the Riverdance company. My role was to design the Plan and the Riverdance building as centrepiece and prepare the accompanying report and co-ordinate the design for all artist’s impressions and technical input.

This completed house by others was the subject of High Court legal proceedings and I was asked to investigate the completed construction on a protected structure house. Works involved forensic investigation, detailed research and reporting, redesign of many elements of roofs, floors, windows and internal design and project managing the project on site. Works also included liaising with both legal teams and Design / Construction Experts and Technical departments of Industry Suppliers.
Dublin Institute of Technology Enterprise Development Unit Placement - EDP 15 1997-98
Awarded placement to develop business concept for conversion of hull of oil tanker in Dublin Bay into Start Up showcase for Innovation and Technology in Ireland. Brief included LIVE / WORK and leisure on board. Designed to be an iconic landmark for the then undeveloped Docklands.

This practice had a strong focus on residential housing projects for both Housing Associations and private Clients. Fionnuala is a dynamic architect and spearheaded national policy on disabled access, working closely with the RIAI, the National Architectural Institute. This was my first role delivering the projects from design to completion in Ireland.

This practice based in Guadeloupe, French West indies was active all over the Caribbean and brought a contemporary approach to building design for shade and natural ventilation. Projects ranged from Education, Cultural, Infrastructure and Tourism focused projects. The experience here involved working with multidisciplinary professionals from France, the US and South America, Poland and sensitised me to the importance of response to climate in architectural design. It also taught me and how to organise office for generating work through competition entries and immersion in a different culture and language.

This practice is a leading light in France and has constantly innovated design in Theatre, Cultural, Educational and Commercial projects. Their flagship project of Le Zenith in Paris in 1984 – a light weight concert venue in Parc de la Villette has been replicated in many cities. Their focus on elegance and clarity of design and have always worked with world class engineers and consultants to achieve this goal. My experience here was my first hands on experience of architecture as a transcending art form, capable of communicating lyrically through refinement and innovative use of structure, space, form and evolving technologies.

Having come to prominence in the 1970’s with the radical Pompidou Centre in the centre of Paris, Renzo Piano created a niche focused on relentless innovation in use of materials, engineering and design. His extended Design Teams include the world’s foremost engineers – Peter Rice, Ove Arup and designers who collaborate fully on design development at all stages. What I learned here over a very intensive period shaped my own thinking on interdisciplinary work practice, efficient design process, role of model making and collaboration. Vividly remember Dominique Rat in the hot print room proudly printing out the first computer generated construction cross section of Thomson roof truss after 3 full days of programming BASIC go to.

Kansai International Airport Japan Competition – Winning Entry 1988 – Completed 1994
Part of Competition Design Team which designed the Airport built on an artificial island near Osaka in Japan. Innovations included elegant roof structures and clear articulation of public transport, circulation and incorporation of landscaping. Once again façade engineering was pushed to its limit.
